Home Organizing Challenge Week 13: Launch Pad

March 29, 2015

14 Week Organizing Challenge

Good morning friends.  Welcome to week 13 of the Home Organizing Challenge.  This week we are concentrating on Launch Pads. This is the place where you set your things down when you walk in the door, where you hang the family calendar & chore charts, store backpacks, leave your car keys, etc.  It doesn’t need to be a big space. If you don’t have a “launch pad”, now’s a great time to create one for your family. You can set up a launch pad in your foyer, kitchen, garage, hallway or mudroom.

WEEK 13:  THE PROCESS
PREPARE:
Gather 6 bins, one for each of the following.
  • Keep
  • Donate/sell
  • Trash/Recycle
  • Other Room
  • Shoes
  • Accessories
SORT:
  • Sort through everything in the space.  Empty it completely as you go. Divide everything into the 6 bins listed above (or more if needed).  Purge the items you no longer want, use, love or need.  Get rid of as much clutter as you can.
CLEAN:
  • Vacuum or mop the floor
  • Wash rugs
  • Wipe down door, baseboards, doorknobs and switch plates
  • Wipe down all shelving
  • Dust lights
ORGANIZE: It’s time to go through everything in the bins. Put the “other room” items where they belong. Toss the trash in the trash can outside. Place donations in your car and “to sell” items in the garage.  When organizing things in the bins, remove one item at a time, categorizing as you go.  Here are some items you could store in your launch pad area.
  • Shoes
  • Backpacks/Purses
  • Keys
  • Reusable Grocery Bags
  • Umbrellas
  • Calendars
  • Jackets/Coats
  • Cold Weather Accessories
  • Dog walking items
  • Mail
  • Chore Charts
  • Electronic charging cords

  1. Love your challenges, I think this will be the first time I try and keep up!!!

  2. Jordan says:

Great post! I definitely have to try these challenges – we’re trying to get a jump start on cleaning this spring and make it the whole year being organized. Hoping these challenges help us declutter!

  3. Kim says:

I LOVE that you have a bin for ‘other room’. I find it really helps to put it in the ‘other room’ bin instead of getting lost around the house putting things away in the middle of a project!

  4. Catherine says:

We just created a launch pad/control center and I’m so glad! I’m still working out the kinks and figuring out just what we need (still missing a dry erase marker, argh!) but overall I’m thrilled with the result. I just need to file my “to file” folder more often!
