2018 Home Organization Challenge: Week 7 Master Closet

February 17, 2018

Hi friends. Welcome back to the challenge. Keep up the great work. You are doing an amazing job. So far, we’ve oragnized the kitchen, pantry, dining room, launch padliving room, and master bedroom. This week we are cleaning out and organizing our master closets. This is a big job but you can do it. It’s so rewarding. Purge as much as you can in this space. If you haven’t worn the clothing in the last year, it might be a good idea to donate it.  Closet space is precious and you don’t want to waste space on things you don’t use.  Have a great week organizing!

If you’re new to the challenge, print out the schedule and checklists below and begin on the current week. For encouragement, join our Home Organization Facebook community to share your progress, or struggles, or questions. Or simply look through the photos and read how others are doing.

We all have different sizes and layouts when it comes to the master closet. Some people have a hundred pairs of shoes and some have only two.  Your situation is unique and you must organize it to fit your needs. The goal is to purge your things, simplify the space, and organize the rest.

THE ORGANIZING PROCESS

Prepare: Gather 8 bins or boxes, one for each of the following.
  • Keep: Current Season
  • Keep: Out of season
  • Donate
  • Sell
  • Trash/Recycle
  • Other Room
  • Shoes
  • Accessories
Sort:
  • Sort through everything in the closet.  Empty it completely as you go. Divide everything into the 8 bins listed above (or more if needed).  Purge the items you no longer want, wear or need.  Get rid of as much clutter as you can.
Clean:
  • Vacuum or mop the floor
  • Wipe down door, baseboards, doorknobs and switch plates
  • Wipe down shelving
  • Dust lights

Organize:  It’s time to go through everything in the bins. Put the “other room” items where they belong. Toss the trash in the trash can outside. Place donations in your car and “to sell” items in the garage.  When organizing things in the bins, remove one item at a time, categorizing as you go. Hang like items together and place out of season items in a rubbermaid tote. Label the box “Jane: Out of season” and place up high on the closet shelf.

  • Short Sleeve
  • Long Sleeve
  • Sweaters (best if folded)
  • Pants/Jeans
  • Dresses
  • Skirts
  • Shorts
  • Purses/Bags
  • Belts
  • Shoes

If you’ve seen my closet tours in the past, you may notice that I’ve purged a lot of clothing. I have eliminated the things I no longer wear by half. Everything in this space is here because I use it and it brings me “Joy”. That’s important when deciding what to keep and what to purge. As Marie Kondo often asks, does it bring you joy?

Don’t be afraid to display your things. You spent the money on them, don’t hide them away in a box.  You can find my jewelry organizer here.

Things like body care and garment care items can be tucked away in baskets. These water hyacinth baskets were purchased at the Container Store but you can also find similar baskets here.

I love the look and sturdiness of wooden hangers. They are worth the investment, although they are not very expensive (under a dollar each). They transform a closet!

Camisoles & tank tops can be organized in a variety of ways. My favorite way is to separate them by color and tuck them neatly into canvas bins. They fit perfectly on this shelf, under my hanging shirts.

You can find these bins here.

I keep my handbag collections on display in my closet. I stuff the bags with plastic air packaging so they keep their shape.

These bins are the perfect way to organize and display wallets and accessories. I found them at TJ Maxx.

Shoe organization is fairly simple to attain. Purge the shoes you no longer wear and place the rest in shoe bins. These clear bins are a great way to store your shoes and to protect them from dust and from getting smooshed.

In these baskets (from Target), I store lingerie, jewelry boxes, and eyeglasses. Below those, I have my collection of nail polish. I purged about 75% of my nail polish.

These organizers are a great way to display nail polish.

Drawer organizers are another great invention! They keep things contained and visually appealing. There are so many options to choose from. Mine were purchased at TJ Maxx, but these would work great as well!

Here is my collection of wallets. Isn’t it a beautiful sight? I really do need to purge a few though.

This shelf is used to display my leather hand bags. I like to keep the collection to what fits here. If I purchase a new hand bag, I purge one to make room.

I moved my collection of essential oils to this nail polish organizer. It’s much easier to see them all at once and grab what I need. You can find this organizer here.

My husband installed this peg board for me to display my accessories. I hang my bags, jackets, and a few dresses on it. It’s a great use of wall space and easy to install. You can find everything at Lowes.

A closet can be functional, organized, and beautiful all at once. Anyone can achieve it. It takes some planning and a little time to implement, but once you do the rewards are grand.  I hope you’ve gained some valuble tips and inspiration that will motivate you to clear the clutter from your master closet. Be sure to watch my You Tube video where I take you on a tour of my master closet and show you what’s in all of the bins and baskets. Have a great day.

  1. Noreen Marando says:

Love your closet – what is the basic system you have (the drawers / hanging area etc)? Is it closet maid or did you have a closet by design type company install it?

  2. Kathy M Scherlitz says:

Toni, where did you get the cedar sachets?

  3. Your closet is such an inspiration. Our master closet is tiny. It’s also located under the stairs so the space is awkward and hard to organize.

  4. I LOVE this idea! I am really looking into organizing more and your closet is goals! I will for sure be purchasing those pins, I think they would be super helpful in the smaller spaces of my closet instead of just setting stuff on the floor.
