How to clean a stand mixer…

January 17, 2013

With holiday baking a sweet memory, now is a great time to clean your stand mixer. Regardless of the brand, the steps are simple and should take no more than five to ten minutes.

Start with unplugging your mixer – if you need to, toss the mixing bowls and beaters in your dishwasher to give them a good washing.

Spray the entire mixer down with your favorite non-toxic cleaner (non-toxic because this is something that comes in contact with your food). Alternately you can use hot, soapy water with a clean kitchen rag or towel.

If you have stuck on particles, you can put a wet rag over the area and let it sit for a few minutes to soften the area.

Wipe down the entire mixer.

Then, lift the top and clean under the mixer.

Don’t forget to clean the backside of the mixer as well.

Now your mixer is clean and ready for some Valentine’s Day baking!

I love my Kitchen Aid! I’ve been cooking up a storm lately and this post just reminded me I should *probably* give it a good clean.
    Thanks for the great post!

great tips! i hate cleaning my stand mixer. I am so use to throwing everything in the dishwasher.

  6. I also love my Kitchen Aid and have had one since 1984. I use mine frequently and have it on my counter. Please note that some models of the Kitchen Aid stand mixers recommend that the beaters are to be hand washed only. Also I find that you can avoid doing an intensive clean like this, if you wipe the mixer after each time you use the unit. Spills are easier to remove when they are fresh. A couple minutes now will save 15 minutes later.

I think that the cleaning process is one of the reasons that I’ve never wanted a stand mixer. To have it out on the counter, you want it to be clean but oh the process getting there. Thanks for the great tips!

  8. I like white vinegar for cleaning and, like you say, if it’s really grungy, I cover with a cloth that’s been soaking in HOT water. That helps prep cleaning.

It may be worth editing your post because not all KitchenAid mixer attachments can be put in the dishwasher. I have the attachments NOT coated with the white coating, they are just the bare metal. KitchenAid states they should NEVER go in the dishwasher. This is very good advice they give you. How do I know? Because my AWESOME CHILDREN 🙂 put my paddle in the dishwasher – it darkened the metal and changed the finish.

I should probably tell my old school about this, but then a whole generation of culinary students would probably hate me forever. 😛 So many mixers to clean.
