Emergency preparedness 8 week program

Emergency Preparedness

Getting your “life organized” can include an array of things, but emergency planning is one that is often forgotten.  To become fully organized, you must have a “plan” in case of an emergency.  Those who do, will feel more in control if an emergency should arise. One of my readers shared this on our FB group this week…

“Hi Ladies, I haven’t been on in days..I live in Brick, NJ, those of you that have seen it on tv, burning, that was my beach. My home only lost 1 tree, we have power. I feel so lucky, so blessed. The rest of my town is under complete & total devistation, w/o power and so many lost their homes. My beach is still burning as I type. The one thing that I realized in my storm prep, was that I was way less stressed than usual, bc I was organized! We acutally were able to pull one car right in the garage, I had an empty closet to hide in, and we weren’t tripping over things in the dark. Thank you, Toni Hammersley, & everyone.”

Would you be prepared if a hurricane hit your city today?  If you lost power for an extended amount of time?  If you experienced an earthquake, tornado, blizzard or flood? If you answered no to any of these, then you are not prepared.

Emergency Preparedness 8 Week Series

“How to create a Survival Station in your home”

“Emergency Preparedness” is an 8 week program that teaches you how to put together an emergency survival station for you and your family.  An “emergency survival station” is described as an area in your home where you store emergency supplies that are needed in case of an emergency, natural disaster, etc.  In the event that you are part of an emergency of any kind, you can be well prepared to deal with it.  I have witnessed first hand, the devastating effects of a natural disaster. In September of 1999, my family lost our home to Hurricane Floyd.   During the hurricaine, the flood waters rose so fast that my daughter (then 13 months old) and I had to be rescued by the coast guard in the middle of the night, while  my husband was away at sea.  By the time we were rescued, the water had reached my shoulders. We spent the night in a high school gymnasium with only the drenched clothes on our backs. No purse, no food, no diaper bag, nothing.  It was the longest night of my life.  We lost everything (newborn keepsakes, wedding pictures, our furniture – all of our belongings).  I didn’t even have diapers for my child. It’s something I don’t wish upon anyone.

I know the importance of being prepared. I learned the hard way. If we’d had an survival station & a plan, we could of had food for a few days, medicine, clothes, and other necessary items that were no where to be found after the disaster.  Im much older now and surely a lot wiser… so I handle things differently than I used to.  I want to teach you to be prepared and learn from my mistakes.  Don’t learn from your mistakes. Be prepared now!!

I organized this program so that you can create an emergency survival station a little at a time.  It takes time and money to get prepared, so with my tips you can build your station, little by little without the financial strain of purchasing everything all at once. If you don’t have the means to afford everything in the next 8 weeks… soak in the knowledge &  purchase things at your own pace. Create a timeline that fits your budget. If you add a little at a time to your station, before you know it, your family will be prepared. Learn as much as you can from this 8 week program.  You will be glad you did! My tips come directly from FEMA, The American Red Cross, many expert survivalists, and my own experience surviving a natural disaster.

I don’t know what I’m doing wrong, but I can not add your graphic to my site as either a widget in my sidebar or even in a blog post. I’m copying and pasting the code in the box. I want to play along and follow rules!

  14. Barbara F. says:

One thing I cannot stress enough, if you live in a flood prone area and you are ordered to evacuate, don’t second guess the authorities: Get out. Make a plan ahead of time with family and best friends that can offer you a safe port in a storm. Do not plan to ride it out, don’t worry about looters, just get out, especially if you have children (or pets). I live on Staten Island and we are still reeling from Superstorm Sandy. Most of the storm related tragedies are people who did not evacuate.

  15. So glad that you are doing this. Over 8 weeks makes it MUCH easier for me to find the time and motivation to get it all done.

  16. Christa says:

Hi!! I want to join too! 🙂 But, I don’t have a blog OR Facebook (I know, I know….I used to have one but deactivated it due to too much computer time!) So I’m in – will you just update the blog, or????

  23. Jen says:

This is a great idea! I live in the mountains & we are used to bad thunderstorms & lots of snow but we dont get hurricanes, tornadoes, flooding …or so I thought. Just this year we had a
derecho(land) hurricane hit us in July knocking down 7 trees & losing power & water for 9 days. Not even 4 months later here came “Sandy” and dropped over 2 feet (in someplaces 6 feet)of snow with blizzard like conditions. With that came no power & no water for 5 more days.
With us living in the mountains you think we would be prepared but we werent. I cant wait to see what you have in store!

  24. Glad to see you undertaking such an important topic. I spend A LOT of time learning about and working on family emergency preparedness and chronicle everything I do, know, and find here: reThinkSurvival.com. I look forward to seeing what you’ve got coming!

  25. Becky says:

I have added my blog to the list so I can be apart of the 8 week preparedness–however; I am new to blogging and am unsure how to add your button to my blog…

  26. Sandra says:

This is awesome! We had a tornado outbreak a year and a half ago and went without power for almost a week. This is one of those things on the “To Do” list, but never seems to get done…thanks for the series to help us get a jump on it! Have a great week.

  27. Evie says:

I live in a rural area, and I am a big pinterest user, always linking up to homestead survival, food preserving, etc. I am so excited to learn everything I can about being prepared. Thanks for sharing!

  29. Courtney says:

I would like to participate, also. Thank you!

  30. J. Murphy says:

What perfect timing! We just moved overseas and are required to prepare an evacuation plan and bags. While we’ve been given a list of mandatory items, I am looking forward to hearing all your suggestions so that I can make sure I have the best evacuation bag possible – and a prepared home for those situations that aren’t evacuation-level emergencies. Thanks in advance for all the work you’re putting into this!

  31. Mabby Lavoy says:

I’d like to join! A FB page would be great!

  33. Tammy says:

Ok, I’m one of THOSE…you know the ones I’m talking about, cell phones weren’t available until I was almost 30, computer screens were blue, and the cursor wasn’t an arrow but a yellow box. I haven’t a clue how to sign up using a blog or otherwise. Is there an easier way to get involved in this series?

  34. Karla says:

I am really excited to follow this! Thanks!

  35. Cindy says:

I don’t have a blog. I am a huge believer in emergency preparedness because we went through a couple of disasters when my sons were younger. During the 1st disaster I was ill-prepared, and my sons suffered for it. We had no electricity, no way to cook food – though I had some, and no plan for survival with any sort of comfort. My mother refused to help us even though she had electricity on the other side of town from us and 2 empty guest rooms, plus, an outside propane grill she could have allowed us to use if it was too much trouble to let me cook at her house. As you can tell, I am still bitter about her behavior since my sons were 9 & 11 at the time, and we needed help. After that incident, I attempted to be better prepared; I now own a tent, a charcoal grill, a propane grill, a propane stove, sleeping bags, a propane heater, a kerosene heater, 2 oil lamps, Mag flashlights, etc. I keep a well-stocked pantry and own non-electric can openers and hand tools. However, I want to learn from your expertise. I don’t have a blog, but I hope I can be part of your class. 🙂

  36. Debbie says:

Creating a survival station in your home, what a great idea. I’m sure the recent events regarding hurricane Sandy have made a lot of people realize they need some type of an emergency plan. I recommend starting out with a simple first aid kit and a 72 hour kit for each member of your family. After this is accomplished then store a supply of water for one week followed by a 3 month food supply. Make goals each month to accomplish this and within a few months you should be prepared for the next unexpected disaster.

  37. Jennifer says:

I want to sign up, I do not have a blog.

  38. Jay says:

I would like to join! I am moving in a couple weeks and may not be able to keep up but I’m going to try… I’m going to be trying to give my b;log a facelift and get back into writing more…

  39. Tara Bilbao says:

This is perfect! Living in Southern California we are always told to be prepared for “The Big One”. I had a kit put together but it was destroyed by a water leak. I’ve had this on my TO DO list for a while and am glad I can go through the program with others. I am ready!

Glad I stumbled upon your blog! I live in Jackson, NJ & between Sandy & the 12 inches of snow from the Nor’easter the week after, we were without power & running water for a total of 9 days so my New Year’s resolution for 2013 was just this…an emergency preparedness kit for my family. We were prepared to a degree & were able to manage, but that was due to taking heed of our Governor’s persistent warnings. Not waiting for the warnings in the future because someday there might not be any! THANK YOU for taking the time to share this with all!

  52. Kate Ann says:
